The word periodontal means “around the tooth”. Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar). When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone. Periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums.
Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it! Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages.
Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy. Researchers are determining if inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease affects these systemic diseases and conditions. Smoking also increases the risk of periodontal disease.
Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.

I have been seeing Dr. Childers for cleanings and procedures for well over ten years. I tell people if I needed to I would drive to Georgia to be her patient! She and her staff are excellent, they make me feel like family and take very good care of me and my dental needs. Dr. Childers is constantly improving her equipment and expanding her knowledge base on state of the art dental procedures. I was referred to Dr. Childers by a well known Orlando pediatric dentist who told me she was who the dentists go to for their own dental work! Julie M. I wanted to write and thank you about my visit yesterday. Thank you for training your staff to be so understanding of those with special needs, everyone made me comfortable and explained all the information very clear. They all went above and beyond just to make me comfy. Thank you for cleaning my teeth and explaining to me how all those machines work. This is great Example of legendary dental skills and service.
